Outing set to honor Port Jeff Station’s fallen veteran Dashan Briggs in Riverhead

|

A big-time BBQ is being planned to honor the life of an American hero.

Tsgt. Dashan Briggs, 30, from Port Jefferson Station, died on March 15 when an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed in western Iraq.

To keep the Riverhead native’s memory alive, the Briggs family has organized the first annual Tsgt. Dashan J. Briggs Family Fun Day and BBQ contest at Stotzky Park in Riverhead.

“His family, friends, and community miss him terribly, but know that he would want us to celebrate his life and everything he loves!” said Briggs’ sister-in-law, Tara Karen.

The BBQ happens on Sept. 23, from noon to 5 p.m.

Donations will be collected at the festival’s entrance, with proceeds benefiting Briggs’ wife Rebecca, and children, Jayden and Ava.

After donating, attendees can participate in a BBQ brisket contest being held by local restaurants and stores. Participants will be able to sample different meats and vote for the best plate.

There will be live music and activities for the kids. For more information, visit @dashanbriggsfamilyfunday on Facebook, or email Tara Karen at tjkaren21@gmail.com.
