A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday for a new town park and community center at The Boulevard, a 322-acre mixed retail and residential development under construction just north of Exit 68N of the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank.

The 7.5-acre park features a baseball field, with a striped multi-purpose field in the outfield, a 1,500-square-foot concession and restroom building and a 3,000-square-foot community center.

The park was a community benefit to the town from developer Yonkers-based developer AVR Realty, which is building 935 apartments and townhomes and retail space off William Floyd Parkway that will be anchored by a WalMart Supercenter. There will also be a Hilton Home2 Suites hotel and an assisted-living facility.

The park is now available to the public. It is located in Councilman Michael LoGuercio’s district, a former Longwood School District trustee who recalled playing on cement ballfields as a kid at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn.

It’s time to “play ball!” Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine said before the official ribbon-cutting.

The town is working with the Longwood Youth Sports Association for the group to play at the field.

“We’ve been looking for fields for 25 to 30 years,” said LYSA President Tom Bove. “This is a tremendous asset for LYSA. This is a great show.”
