Pat-Med’s Meg Gabel raises over $5,000 by shaving her head

|

She did it!

Meg Gabel, the 17-year-old junior from Patchogue-Medford High School, cut off her locks through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Monday at Waverly Avenue Elementary School.

“It was pretty life-changing,” she said.

GreaterPatchogue caught up with Gabel last month when she explained she was buzzing her head in memory of a childhood friend, Emma Jordan.

Gabel’s goal was to raise as much money as she could to support childhood cancer research.

And she did just that.

The Pat-Med student raised $5,316, which was about three thousand more than the next participant.

“I”m glad I was able to raise so much,” she said. “In total, the whole event raised about $48,000.”

For her efforts, she was awarded a medal and, of course, the opportunity to go first for her new haircut.

Gabel had her 21 inch-long hair cut around 9:50 a.m.

They first cut off her braids, which she donated to a nonprofit called Children with Hair Loss.

Then, the buzzer did the rest.

The whole process, she says, went so quick.

“It didn’t even feel done when it was,” she said. “I thought there was so much more, (she chuckled) but there wasn’t.”
