This waterfront restaurant in Patchogue has just earned three Long Island regional 2020 Diners’ Choice Awards from OpenTable, it was announced last week.

The Oar Steak & Seafood Grille, located along Patchogue River, garnered high praise from OpenTable, the popular reservation website that bases the awards on reservation numbers and thousands of customer reviews.

The Oar was recognized in the Late Night Find, Outdoor Dining and Scenic View categories.

Heading into its 34th season in Patchogue, The Oar is also coming off extensive renovations the owners undertook in 2018.

The Oar completely rebuilt its bar, expanded the ceilings and added new flooring, among other upgrades to the restaurant. Wood from the old ceiling was also incorporated with the new design.

Owner Dick Blakeslee purchased the Sun Dek Marina off West Avenue in 1986 and built The Oar up over time from what was at first a sandwich shack.

“All we sold were Stewart Sandwiches; it was a little toaster oven and everything came in a bag,” his daughter, Lindsey Chalifoux, who runs the restaurant, previously told GreaterPatchogue. “It was hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza.”

By 2015, OpenTable was listing The Oar as among the Top 100 Al Fresco Dining Restaurants in America.

“It was a broken down old boatyard but my father had a vision,” Chalifoux said in 2018. “This was his baby. And every year it’s gotten busier and busier.”
