The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library recently celebrated the grand reopening of its renovated main building in Shirley.
Part of a $26.7 million initiative approved by voters in 2019, the project includes the renovation of the main library in Shirley and the construction of satellite branches in Moriches and Mastic Beach, both completed in 2023.
Funding for the plans came primarily from a $22.7 million bond referendum, with the remaining costs covered by reserved funds.
Located at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Roberts Road, the 45,000-square-foot main library now features updated service desks, quiet study areas, modern meeting rooms, expanded collections, computer labs, makerspaces, an archival room, and an ADA-compliant performance space.
The main library was closed for two years to undergo this extensive renovation, which cost just over $16.3 million, according to the library’s website.
“It’s a new building. Everything was taken down to the steel [and rebuilt],” said Joe Maiorana, president of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library Board, in an interview with Newsday. “It’s super rewarding to finally address the library’s needs for the next 50 years.”
