Police: Beachgoer stumbles upon human bone at Smith Point Beach

Suffolk County Police are investigating a shocking discovery after human remains were found on the shore at Smith Point County Park.

One sharp-eyed beachgoer spotted what she thought was a human bone and alerted park employees, who then called 911 at 1:35 p.m., Suffolk police confirmed.

Homicide Squad detectives rushed to the scene and confirmed the grim discovery.

The next step is to determine the cause of death and make a positive identification, so the remains have been taken to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
