Police: Small plane crashes on Shelter Island

|

A small plane crashed Thursday afternoon on Shelter Island, police confirmed to Greater Long Island.

Cops said that there were no injuries in the wreck, which occurred just before 12:30 p.m. on the Klenawicus Airfield. No further information on the wreck was immediately available.

Penelope Moore, a real estate broker for Saunders who lives in Shelter Island Heights, happened on the accident scene earlier this afternoon, and took the following photos.

Klenawicus Airfield, a grass-covered landing strip, is operated by the Shelter Island Pilots’ Association and is located on the eastern side of the island, just south of Burns Road and north of Congdon Road.

The airfield is primarily used for general aviation, including small private planes and occasionally helicopters. It is known for its rustic charm and picturesque setting.
