Port Jeff Village beaches will be open to residents only this Memorial Day weekend

|

The Village of Port Jefferson will continue to have its beaches open to residents-only this Memorial Day weekend.

Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant said the beaches are usually not open until the end of June when school gets out but because of the current circumstances and schools being closed for the rest of the academic year, the village opened them early.

“Because there was such a rush and push to do anything, our beaches will remain open for our residents,” Garant said.

Below is what you need to know about the village’s protocols and requirements for the residential East and West beaches.

The village will check cars for resident stickers before granting access to the beaches, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The bathrooms will not open until 11 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.

Swimming is prohibited for the time being. The mayor said the state may not allow swimming at these beaches until around July or August.

Masks are not required unless you are in the restroom area.

Open container laws are still in effect on the beaches. Restaurants can serve drinks to-go, but it must be in a closed container.

Social distancing will be enforced by the beach attendants and the code enforcement bureau.

“They will make sure that people are setting up their blankets accordingly, keeping the social distance,” Garant said.
