Port Jefferson football player facing sudden MS diagnosis gets outpouring of support

|

The family of a 17-year-old Port Jefferson football player is seeking support from the community as the high school junior begins an unexpected and difficult battle with multiple sclerosis.

Sean Tardif’s life changed abruptly last month when he woke up unable to move the right side of his body, his family said. What began as a confusing morning quickly escalated into a medical emergency, and doctors later diagnosed him with relapsing-remitting MS — a severe and unpredictable form of the disease.

The disease has at least temporarily sidelined a very active student-athlete. Sean plays varsity football and runs track; he’s also a junior volunteer firefighter. Seeing him physically unable to do the things he loves has been devastating for those who know him best, the family notes in GoFundMe fundraiser created this week.

The fundraising page describes weeks of aggressive treatment — including what has been transformational plasmapheresis — and the hard work Sean has put into physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. His family writes that he’s approached recovery with the same discipline and grit he brings to the football field.

Difficult journey ahead

Sean’s family further noted that the challenges he faces ahead are significant. Many of Sean’s ongoing medical needs — from specialized therapies to nutritional support and equipment — are not covered by insurance, the fundraising page says. The costs, combined with the unpredictable nature of MS in someone so young, have placed a heavy financial strain on the family.

Sean earlier this month returned home after weeks of hospitalization and rehabilitation.

As donations come in, the family says they’re grateful for every contribution and message of support. Each one, they said, serves as a reminder that the community is standing with Sean, on and off the field.
