Port Jeff’s annual Health and Wellness Fest is all set for April 28

|

Eat well, live well. That is the motto for the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual Health and Wellness Fest.

The purpose of the Port Jeff Health & Wellness Fest is to promote good health to all in the local areas of Port Jefferson, reads a statement by the chamber.

The free event, which will be hosted at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School on Saturday, April 28, will have a series of family-fun activities. It runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Activities include an interactive pilates exhibition by Port Jefferson Pilates, as well as a Tai Chi demonstration by the Authentic Shaolin Kung Ku School of Holtsville.

The Port Jefferson Library will also have a stand giving away free giveaways that “exercise the brain.”

Speaking of exercise, the chamber is partnering with the Port Jefferson Royal Educational Foundation for a 2-mile Power of one Family Fun Run. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Village Center and finishes at the fest.

To live up to this year’s motto, a large portion of the day is geared toward creating better eating habits.

To do so, St. Charles Hospital’s dining staff will be on hand providing tips through their healthy food demonstrations.

“We thought this was would be a great event that could support not only chamber partners that have businesses in the health and wellness field, but also to give something back to the community,” said the chamber’s director of operations, Barbara Ransome.

For the first time, the event will be featuring more animals-vendors to show how they can positively impact people’s lives.

One furry companion who will be at the Health and Wellness is Fest is a 2-year-old Black Lab Weimaraner mix named Kota. He is owned by Pete Moloney of Moloney Funeral Homes.

“Koto comes to the funeral home where people pet him and he shows affection to those who want it,” said a Health and Wellness Fest official. “He is the first grief therapy dog on Long Island.”
