Notre Dame’s quarterback this year wasn’t the only Long Islander on campus fightin’ for a national championship.

Ronkonkoma native Matt Downing has been in battle for the 2022 “Jeopardy!” National College Championship. Representing the Fighting Irish, the senior marketing major competed with 35 other college students from across the country for a $250,000 grand prize.

Downing’s appearance on the popular quiz program is scheduled for Feb. 10. The five-part championship will air at 8 p.m. on ABC, each night from Feb. 7-11.

“Not too long ago I got the call that I was selected to be on @jeopardy with a chance to represent @notredame in the #JeopardyCollegeChampionship,” Downing, who was a student-athlete at Connetquot High School, posted on his Facebook wall.

“After a once in a lifetime trip out to LA where I competed against 35 other phenomenal students for the $250,000 prize, I’m excited to share that the tournament is finally going to air!”

Downing has a second major in applied and computational mathematics and statistics. Notre Dame reported that he is involved with several campus organizations, including Camp Kesem, the Student International Business Council and the men’s boxing club. He competed on Connetquot’s varsity wrestling team in high school.

Downing has served summer internships with UPS in 2020 and at KPMG in New York in 2021. He will continue his employment at KPMG after graduation.
