Sachem alumna Maria Michta-Coffey placed 24th today in the women’s 35K race walk at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The two-time Olympian finished the race in 3:02:22. It was Michta-Coffey’s seventh appearance at the world championship — her third as a mother.

“Next week will be my 7th appearance, 3rd time as a Mom, 2nd time as a full-time PA, and 5x married!” she posted on Instagram days before the big race. “Really psyched and proud to represent Team USA in Budapest next week!”

Spain’s Maria Perez won the race, blazing across the finish line with a championship record time of 2:38:40.

Michta-Coffey, 37, a Nesconset native who graduated from Sachem High School North and LIU Post, competed in the 22K walk event at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. She was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
