A taste of Sweden has arrived in Stony Brook Village with the opening of Saturday Candy Co., a colorful new sweets shop at 73 Main St., next to Schnitzels.
The shop, now entering its second week of operation, offers a playful nod to a long-standing Scandinavian tradition. Its name draws from the Swedish word lördagsgodis — meaning “Saturday sweets” — a custom that began in 1959 when Swedish families limited candy consumption to one day a week as part of a national health initiative.
While Saturday Candy Co. is open seven days a week, owner Julia Brandt has kept that spirit alive by specializing in authentic Swedish candies. Inside, visitors find a vibrant pick-and-mix wall stacked with sweet and sour gummies in pretty much every shape and texture. Most are made with natural flavoring and coloring, Brandt said.
The store, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., also features vegan and gluten-free treats from the popular Bubs brand, Swedish chocolate bars, and branded merchandise that include tote bags, crewnecks and hats.
Began as an online shop
“Growing up, there was always a bowl or bag of candy in our pantry. Candy culture in Sweden is huge,” said Brandt, who moved from Sweden to the United States in 2018 and founded the brand in July 2024 shortly after welcoming her first child. “To me, going to the candy store is such an important tradition — it brings families together.”
What began as a small online shop from her Three Village home quickly grew through community support and events across the Hamptons, leading to the opening of her first brick-and-mortar store this month.
