Sayville dominates both sides of the ball in 32-0 victory over Hills West

|

The week started like every other week for Sayville’s sophomore lineman John Andruszkiewicz.

Since training camp began, the sophomore was getting in his reps as an offensive lineman. But that all changed a few days before the season opener against Half Hollow Hills West. That’s when Andruszkiewicz was told he was going to be needed on the defensive side of the ball.

It turned out to be a great move by the coaches. Andruszkiewicz was unstoppable — finishing with a game-high three sacks — and a big reason why the defense was able to shut down and shut out the Colts in Friday night’s 32-0 win.

“We wanted that shutout bad,” said Andruszkiewicz. “Our coaches prepared us so well.”

The offense wasted little time putting up its first points of the season. Senior quaterback Patrick Coan, who had 29 passing touchdowns last season, found Jake Arato in the back of the endzone for a 12-yard score on the Golden Flashes opening drive of the game.

Next possession, they did it again. Just 15 seconds into the second quarter Coan hit Luke Neugebauer in stride, a 40-yard touchdown hookup put Sayville on top 12-0.

“Against a good opponent like Hills West, it’s very important to be able to drive the ball early and score on offense early and put up points,” Coan said.

The Flashes running game was working too. Sophomore Timothy Holahan capped the first half scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 19-0.

And Sayville added another on the opening possession in the second half thanks to the legs of Tristian Vitale. His four-yard scamper put Sayville up 26-0.

Coan added his third touchdown of the game a little later on a quaterback keeper to make it 32-0.

“It was just a great team win,” Coan told Greater Long Island. “Great defense, great blicking up front, great routes by the receivers. Great coaching. Great stuff all around.”

Sayville has now won eight straight over Hills West.
