In a rare matchup between the two longtime Suffolk football powerhouses, Sayville defeated William Floyd 24-0 in Mastic Beach today.
The two programs had not met in 40 years, and were only paired for the non-league matchup this week because Sayville’s originally scheduled opponent Harborfields was unable to play due to a COVID-19 quarantine.
Sayville’s wide-open spread offense quickly got to work against William Floyd, driving deep into William Floyd territory late in the first quarter before penalties pushed the Golden Flashes back and forced a punt.
In the second quarter, Sayville quarterback Jack Cheshire’s touchdown pass and touchdown run put the Golden Flashes up 14-0 at halftime.
Sayville added a field goal in the third quarter, and then closed out the scoring with 10:07 left in the fourth quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by C.J. Messina.
