Sayville tennis and track athletes honored at Dellecave Awards ceremony

|

Two Sayville High School student-athletes were honored at the 19th Annual Butch Dellecave Awards held recently at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

Michael McKillop and Hannah Niggemeier — All-County athletes who graduated last month — were Sayville’s nominees for the award, which are named in memory of the legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave.

The award is the product of a 19-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation and Newsday. Nominees are students who are not only at the top of their game, but also score high in classroom performance and in their commitment to local community service.

Niggemeier, who will major in nursing and play tennis for Molloy College, competed six seasons for Sayville’s varsity tennis and golf teams, earning All-County honors each year. She earned team most valuable player honors seven times between the two squads and captained the tennis team her junior and senior years. She is among at least a dozen 2019 Sayville graduates expected to compete in Division I and II college athletics.

Niggemeier has been highly active in her community, volunteering in Good Samaritan Hospital’s mother baby unit and as a bible school teacher at St. Lawrence.

McKillop was an All-County track and field star for Sayville, competing in the triple jump, long jump and pentathlon, among other events. Off the field, McKillop was dedicated to service, organizing an effort at Sayville High School to support a Greater Long Island Running Club Soles4Souls drive. The high school collected 217 donated pairs of shoes, led by McKillop’s efforts.
