Three Sayville High School wrestling teammates graduating this month have signed commitments to play sports at Division I college programs, the school district announced this week.
Mack Murtha will play football at Rhode Island, while Yirdaw Rivera will attend West Point to wrestle for Army and Jamisen Colongione will stay closer to home to wrestle at Long Island University.
Mack Murtha — Rhode Island football
Murtha wrestled on Sayville’s varsity squad for six seasons, earning All-State honors in 2022 and recording 139 career wins. He was also an All-State football player and earned the Cassese Award for top defensive back in Suffolk County in 2021. He also played wide receiver for Sayville.
Mack’s older brother Brock is on Notre Dame’s baseball team, which is competing in this spring’s College Baseball World Series. His grandfather George Gill was a wide receiver at Boston College from 1968 to 1970.
Yirdaw Rivera — Army wrestling
Yirda Rivera earned All-County honors in 2022 and tallied 99 career wins in four varsity seasons with the Golden Flashes. He was undefeated in dual meet competition during his senior year season.
Jamisen Colongione — Long Island University Wrestling
Jamisen Colongione earned All-County honors this past season, going 41-7 on the mat. He wrestled for the varsity team for three seasons.
