SBU makes huge leaps in Forbes’ annual ‘America’s Best Value Colleges’ list

|

Affordability and a top college are words that don’t typically mix.

Well, that’s not the case with Stony Brook University, apparently, which recently made some leaps up Forbes’ 2018 list of America’s Best Value Colleges.

Out of the 300 schools that made the list, SBU ranked No. 41, which is 42 spots higher than last year. Of public school’s only, Stony Brook was No. 18 — 11 spots higher than last year.

Stony Brook made a name for itself in New York State as well.

“[Stony Brook] received the highest ranking of all SUNY schools,” reads a statement from Stony Brook University administrators.

As for the ranking system, Forbes uses data collected from the Department of Education’s College Scorecard, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and PayScale to find alumni earnings, school prices, net debt, school quality, timely graduation and the amount of Pell Grant recipients, in addition to room and board.

This year’s methodology is different from year’s prior, as Forbes is shifting the focus more toward financial indicators like earnings, school prices, and student debt. It was also the first time Forbes considered fees, room and board, drop-out risk, and timely graduation rates.
