Schafer’s in Port Jeff relaunches as the new Harbor Grill restaurant

|

The popular Schafer’s restaurant overlooking the harbor in Port Jefferson has got a new look and new name.

Over the last several months, the Port Jeff landmark building on West Broadway underwent a list of renovations, culminating in the introduction of a new brand: Harbor Grill.

“We re-did the entire restaurant,” said owner Tom Schafer, who opened Schafer’s in 2011.  “It’s a new concept with a brand-new menu.”

The new Harbor Grill is equipped with an enclosed outdoor staircase, a heating system upstairs, new furniture, lighting, and flooring. There’s also a new bathroom off the rooftop dining area.

The stage has also been removed for added space.

Schafer says the new Harbor Grill offers a laid-back coastal vibe.

“We wanted to make it more casual,” Schafer said. “We’re offering an American cuisine which is a hodgepodge of different dishes with American twists to them.”

The restaurant also offers two different menus, one for the main dining areas and another for the rooftop.

“We shrunk the menu down to one page it is more economically viable for tourism,” he said of the rooftop menu.

Some of those upstairs menu items include grilled chicken and steak skewers, and footlong hot dogs.

“If you want to have a quick bite, you’re good to go upstairs,” he said.

As for nightlife, Harbor Grill will continue to bring in DJs on the weekends. Other nightly promotions are in the works, like a possible “30 and over Thursday,” says Schafer.

Since re-opening over the last couple weeks as Habor Grill, the response has been great, he said.

“So far, it has been well-received by many.”
