Second driver killed in another fiery crash at same Sunken Meadow toll plaza

A driver died Monday afternoon in a fiery crash at the Sunken Meadow State Parkway toll plaza — the second fatal wreck at the same spot in just a week, state police said.

New York state troopers responded to the one-vehicle crash on the northern part of the parkway, in the area of the toll booths at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park about 1:04 p.m. Monday, police said.

A preliminary investigation found the vehicle crashed into the toll booth area and became engulfed in flames. One occupant was found dead inside, police said.

The driver has not been publicly identified by authorities.

Members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, along with the New York State Park Police, the Kings Park Fire Department and Suffolk Police.

Monday’s crash came exactly one week after a driver died in a nearly identical crash at the same toll plaza on Sept. 14.

In that crash, a vehicle struck the toll booth area and caught fire at 11:14 a.m., killing the driver, the car’s only occupant.

State police have not cited a possible cause for either crash.
