See what’s in store for the planned Medford library at Jan. 25 virtual meeting

|

The engineering and planning firm designing the library branch planned for Medford will be hosting a virtual public meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, Patchogue-Medford Library officials said.

H2M Architects + Engineers will be on hand to walk residents through plans for the 5,000-square-foot facility, and take community feedback and suggestions. Anyone is welcome to attend.

The branch will be built within the Medford Athletic Complex on Horseblock Road. The building will hold the typical books and other library materials, but also meeting room space, computer access areas, WiFi, an outdoor area and plenty of parking, officials said.

The basic timeline moving forward is approximately 18-24 months, officials said.

The library anticipates sending the design plans to the state Education Department by early summer. Once the state approve the plans, the bid process for construction begins.

The Town of Brookhaven has leased the property to the library at no cost, and the Medford Hamlet Foundation has donated $1.6 million toward the construction of the Library.

The total project is projected to cost between $2.5 million to $3 million.

The Patchogue-Medford Library board has committed $1 million from capital reserves to complete the project, and was recently recommended to receive NYS construction aid in the amount of approximately $88,000, officials said.

“Medford residents have been looking to increase access to their library services since 1966,” Danielle Paisley, the library director, said in a statement. “But, the money and resources were never available at the right time.

“The library’s board of trustees, led by president Harold Trabold, committed to finding a space to offer library services closer in proximity to our Medford residents.

“The Medford Hamlet Foundation stepped up to offer funding.”

She also thanked town- and state-level elected leaders for their much-needed support.
