Shelter Island historical home steps from the ferry listed at $1.3 million

|

A wrap-around, covered front porch that cries out for a rocking chair, a rear patio that whispers al fresco dining and relaxation, and a formal entryway that says “Step inside and stay awhile.”

The vibe at 5 Washington St. in Shelter Island Heights is all about historical charm and laid back elegance. The five-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home sits on a gentle hill and is a short walk from the island’s North Ferry and even closer to the cafes, shops and other activities located on quaint Grand Avenue.

The 1,970-square-foot house hit the market early last month carrying a $1.45 million asking price. Just last week, the price dropped to a shade under $1.3 million.

Penelope Moore of Saunders & Associates noted that the property is a stone’s throw away from the Chequit Hotel, a landmark on Shelter Island for over a century. Built in 1872, the hotel is just two years older than its vintage Washington Street neighbor with the throwback porches.

The real estate broker also said that ownership of the property comes with a Shelter Island Heights Beach Club membership.

Here’s what else you need to know about the home at 5 Washington St.:

• The front bedroom includes a walk-in closet with two windows, and a screened door that leads to a Juliet balcony.
• Wood flooring throughout, including freshly sanded and stained floors on the first floor.
• Refinished kitchen cabinets and wood counters.
• Living, formal and great rooms.
• Cedar clapboard siding on the exterior of the house.
