Side Door Social debuts in Middle Island with globally inspired menu

|

A new neighborhood restaurant bringing globally inspired flavors, handcrafted cocktails and a familiar face to Middle Island is now open.

Side Door Social officially celebrated its grand opening Thursday, Aug. 20, at 848 Middle Country Road, following a preview week that gave diners an early taste of the new restaurant.

Owner Kevin Muller, who grew up in the Longwood school district, said he saw an opportunity to bring something new to a community he knows well.

“We have awesome, home-cooked food, great cocktails and a fun environment,” Muller told Greater Long Island.

Muller and Executive Chef Jose Nunez (pictured) met earlier this year and quickly began working together to bring the concept to life.

Nunez, a native of Peru, brings an international culinary background to Middle Island. After studying culinary arts in Peru, he continued his training in Poland and worked in kitchens across Europe and aboard cruise ships before coming to Long Island, where he has served as an executive chef and led several local restaurant kitchens.

At Side Door Social, Nunez has created an approachable New American menu that draws on those experiences while focusing on fresh ingredients and bold flavors.

Opening offerings include steamed bao buns, wings and other shareable plates, along with heartier entrées served with rice and vegetables. Muller said the idea is to offer food that feels fresh and comforting, with options for a range of tastes.

The restaurant takes over the former AYCE Mongolian Grill space. Muller installed a new kitchen and bar and updated the decor while adding outdoor seating.

Side Door Social also plans to host live music.

The restaurant is open Thursday through Monday from noon to midnight and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
