Sidewalks will soon be coming to William Floyd Elementary School.

On Thursday, officials announced in front of the school that $250,000 in State and Municipal Facilities Program, or SAM, funds were recently approved for the project.

The sidewalks will be placed on Lexington Avenue in the area that doesn’t already have them, on Fleet Road to the north and Clyde Road to the south.

Suffolk Legis. Rudy Sunderman said the project is the result of a few constituents reaching out to him at the start of the 2018 school year to see about getting sidewalks to connect to John S. Hobart Elementary School, located at the southeast end of William Floyd Elementary.

He reached out to Assemblyman Fred Thiele, who nominated the project during the 2019 budget process, and the Town of Brookhaven and William Floyd School District were both on board. The sidewalks also had the support of the Pattersquash Creek Civic Organization.

Thiele said the project was officially approved by the state Assembly speaker a few weeks ago.

“This is a real partnership between all levels of government coming together,” Sunderman said, adding, “It’s really about children’s and pedestrian safety.”

“On behalf of the William Floyd School District, I am grateful to our elected officials for working together to bring this project together,” said William Floyd School District Superintendent of Schools Kevin M. Coster. “New sidewalks will add to the aesthetics of our grounds, but more importantly, will enhance the safety of our students and their families for years to come.”

Sunderman said the sidewalks, which will be installed by the Brookhaven Town Department of Highways, led by Daniel P. Losquadro, should be completed in the next few months. Barriers were already in place along a portion of Lexington Avenue in front of the William Floyd Elementary.

“The superintendent of highways said as long as the winter holds, before the winter we should have the sidewalks completed.”
