Sonic: New restaurant coming to Shirley this summer

|

Sonic Drive-In plans to open a new restaurant at the Majestic Corners shopping center in Shirley this summer after getting approvals from the Town of Brookhaven planning board on Jan. 13.

The site’s developer, Gould Shirley Real Estate Corp., had previously sought to include 46 outdoor seats with the site plan, but pulled that request for now following questions at the planning board’s December meeting as to whether a special permit was needed.

The developer anticipates seeking a special permit for the seating, which would be located under an outdoor pavilion, from the town’s zoning board sometime in the future, said the developer’s lawyer, Lisa A. Cairo, at the Jan. 13 planning board meeting.

The new Sonic Drive-In will be located at the northwest corner of the shopping center, which is anchored by Best Market.

“The SONIC Drive-In located at 2 Revilo Ave. in Shirley, N.Y. is scheduled to open this summer. We’re excited to provide the Shirley community with SONIC’s highest level of service and a one-of-a-kind dining experience and will provide additional information as we near the grand opening,” Johnny Jones, vice president of development planning at Inspire Brands, Sonic’s parent company, said in a statement to GreaterMoriches.

The 2,238-square-foot restaurant will include a 4,500-square-foot pavilion, where future outdoor seating may be located, and where customers can walk up to order, 20 vehicle stalls, and a traditional drive-thru. There will be no indoor seating.

The planning board approved the developer site plan with a special permit for a major restaurant as part of a commercial center 6-0, with one abstention.
