The geese made ‘em do it.
An elderly border collie was rescued by Southampton police in Sebinac Inlet Wednesday morning after the dog chased and swam after geese more than 1,000 feet from shore, police said.
The rescue mission began about 9:18 a.m. when Southampton Town bay constables went to the area of Sebonac Inlet in rainy and turbulent conditions with minimal visibility, looking for the struggling border collie, who is about 15 years old.
The dog was unable to return to shore, and was located swimming in circular patterns and showing signs of succumbing to exhaustion and hypothermia. Constables guided the dog to shore, where it collapsed from exhaustion.
The Constables then carried the pet to its owner. Police said the dog is now doing well.
