A 4-year-old child was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday after a car crashed into trees along the Southern State Parkway on Wednesday, state police said.

Troopers said the wreck happened in the westbound side of the parkway near Exit 20, Grand Avenue, about 2 p.m. on Wednesday. A 2006 Nissan Sentra struck trees and both the driver and the child were trapped inside the car, police said.

Emergency responders removed both occupants from the car. The child was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The condition of the driver was not immediately released.

The westbound side of the parkway was shut down from about 2 to 6 p.m.

The investigation remains ongoing. State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call Troop L headquarters at 631.756.3300.
