The Lady Seawolves are headed to the Big Dance.

The Stony Brook University women’s basketball team punched its first-ever ticket to the NCAA Tournament after toppling Maine, 64-60, in the American East championship game Friday afternoon.

The two teams were originally set to face each other in last year’s conference championship but the postseason was upended prematurely due to the global pandemic.

“Last year, we had such a magical season and didn’t get to cap it off,” head coach Caroline McCombs told Stony Brook Athletics. “To remember that for the past year, and this year having the opportunity to play in the championship game again, we’ve been hungry for this for a long time. I’m just really proud of the growth of this team. I absolutely will remember this forever.”

Stony Brook will face off against No. 3 Arizona in the first round of the tournament. The game is set for Monday, March 22, at 2 p.m.
