Stop & Shop closing down four of its Long Island grocery stores

|

Stop & Shop announced Friday that it will close four of its Long Island supermarkets some time by this fall.

Shop & Stop locations in Coram, East Meadow, Hempstead and Greenvale will all shut down permanently by Nov. 2, Stop & Shop’s parent company Ahold Delhaize confirmed.

Across its five-state footprint in the northeast, the grocery store chain will close a total of 32 stores. This includes three others in New York state, five in Connecticut, eight in Massachusetts, 10 in New Jersey and two Rhode Island.

“As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” said Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid. “Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, with the customer shopping experience in mind. These stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled.

“We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation,” he added.

Below are the addresses of the Long Island Stop & Shops slated to close.

  • 130 Wheatley Plaza in Greenvale
  • 294 Middle Country Road in Coram
  • 132 Fulton Ave. in Hempstead
  • 2525 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow

After the store closures are complete, Stop & Shop will continue to operate more than 350 stores, the chain said in its statement.
