NWS: Suffolk County could see up to 16 inches of snow accumulation

This storm watch story was last updated at 8:53 p.m. on Sunday.

With an impending snowstorm expected to dump up to 16 inches of snow on Suffolk County, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine has issued a State of Emergency from 10 p.m. Sunday until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Shortly after those declarations, Eastport-South Manor, Center Moriches, East Moriches and William Floyd school districts all announced that school will be closed on Monday.

Earlier, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Suffolk County — as well as for Nassau County and New York City — predicting 6-16 inches of snow for the area. Snowfall began in Suffolk before 7 p.m. Sunday and is expected to drag deep into Tuesday.

Blizzard-like conditions are possible for Monday, from the morning hours into the evening, the weather service said, with wind gusts as high as 50 mph.

Travel is expected to be hazardous or impossible due to low visibility for tomorrow morning and evening commutes.

The town said that vehicles parked in the street should be moved to driveways or they could be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Abandoned vehicles obstructing access for snowplows and emergency vehicles may also be removed by the town.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless there is an emergency or if it is absolutely essential to travel, Romaine said. Monday garbage pick-up is canceled across the town.

Brookhaven officials urges residents to take these “common sense” precautions to ensure their safety during this and future snow events:

  • Stay off the roads and park your car in your driveway, starting by 10 p.m. Sunday and lasting until 10 p.m. Tuesday, to allow snowplows and emergency vehicles to pass.
  • Clear fire hydrants of snow in your area.
  • Remove ice and snow from steps, sidewalks and walkways.
  • Keep cell phones and other electronic devices charged.
  • Have a battery-operated radio and a flashlight ready in case of a power outage.
  • When shoveling snow, dress warm in layers and avoid over-exertion.
  • If you must drive, make sure your tires are properly inflated and that your windshield wipers work properly.
  • Keep pets indoors.
  • Check on elderly friends and neighbors.
  • Listen to the local radio or television news for weather updates and emergency notifications.
  • When using a generator, place it outdoors and follow all manufacturers’ safety precautions.

Residents should call 451-TOWN to report snow related issues. To report a power outage or downed wires, call PSEG at 800.490.0075 or go to the PSEG website to file a report online.
