Suffolk County Water Authority starts huge upgrade project in Greenport

|

One of Long Island’s top tourist destinations is getting a key infrastructure upgrade.

In the past decade, the hotels have continued to pop up, as have the restaurants, but Greenport water service hadn’t kept up with the growth.

That was until this month, when work started on a major water main replacement project along Main Road, the Suffolk County Water Authority has announced. The work is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Once complete, the area will see approximately 2,100 feet of undersized water main replaced with new, larger ductile iron water main, as well as the installation or replacement of four fire hydrants.

The goal is to provide more reliable water service to the area, especially when the population swells in the warmer months and the business picks up.

“Greenport is one of Long Island’s most popular tourist destinations, especially during the summer,” said Water Authority chairman Charles Lefkowitz. “It is very important that we ensure that the area’s water infrastructure is prepared to service its year-round residents as well as those visiting during the season.”

“This project will ensure that everybody who uses water from these water mains receive the best water service available,” he said.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation that serves some 1.2
million Suffolk residents. It operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.
