An on-duty Suffolk County Police sergeant suffered serious injuries Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash in Shirley, police said.
Suffolk Police said Sgt. Wayne Kelly, 46, was driving an unmarked 2017 Chevrolet Impala south on William Floyd Parkway about 12:55 p.m. when a northbound 2008 Honda Odyssey tried to turn left on Ridgewood Drive and smashed into the police car.
Kelly was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the Honda, Cristian Guartatanga Carchipulla, 40, of Shirley, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating the crash. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check, authorities said.
The crash came just days after an alleged drunk driving wreck in St. James killed Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa as she was on her way in to work.
Anyone with information about Tuesday’s crash is asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit at 631.852.6555.
