An early morning crash that shut down westbound rush-hour traffic on Sunrise Highway in North Bellport for hours Thursday left a 59-year-old Mastic woman seriously injured, police said.
Waldina Sanchez was driving west about 5:25 a.m. when she lost control of her Toyota Corolla and struck the center median, cops said. As she rebounded and attempted to reenter traffic lanes, her car was hit by a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, a pickup truck.
Sanchez was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. The pickup driver, Wesley Krupp, 70, also of Mastic, went to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk in Patchogue with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said westbound Sunrise Highway was closed for several hours as police investigated and cleared the scene. Both cars were impounded for a safety check.
The crash remains under investigation by Suffolk Police’s Fifth Squad. Anyone with information is asked to call 631.854.8552.
