It’s one of the remaining few. It’s also believed to be the last remaining one-room school house still in its original spot, and its original foundation, on Long Island.

The Swan River Schoolhouse was built in 1858 on Roe Avenue, and has been kept in remarkable condition, with its original benches and pot belly stove, said local historian Steve Lucas, also the treasurer of the Greater Patchogue Historical Society.

Since the historical society manages the Brookhaven Town-owned property, Lucas has the keys.

This past week he allowed GreaterPatchogue.com in for a tour. To see for yourself, Lucas and the historical society will be hosting an open house for the fourth and final time this coming Sunday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event is open to children and adults, with activities for both.
