They’ll be walking for a guide dog Sunday in Patchogue; you can too

|

The Patchogue Lioness Lions Foundation is getting set to host its 14 annual Walk for a Guide Dog through Patchogue Village on Sunday.

The two-mile walk begins at the Patchogue Fire Department building on Jennings Avenue at 9 a.m., but the day gets started with a big breakfast celebrating The Centennial of Lions International at 8 a.m. (Map below.)

Registration forms are available at The Colony Shop at 31 East Main Street.

The minimum sponsorship amount is $20, or $10 for walkers under the age of 16.

The Patchogue Lioness Lions Foundation has been raising money for guide dogs since the 1980s.

“Every year we’ve been able to get a puppy, sometimes two puppies,” said Colony Shop owner Lorice Fiala.”It’s $6,000 to sponsor a puppy and this event will cover it [entirely].”

The puppies come form the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown.

The Lions and Lionesses also get to name the puppy and choose the breed.

“Some of them are named in honor of people or are named in memory of members who have passed away,” Fiala said.

The group’s first puppy came in 1986 through the efforts of various fundraisers, from bake sales to car washes; the big walk fundraiser started in 2003.
