Five years after collecting 5,580 books for a Boy Scout reading merit badge, 17-year-old Eagle Scout candidate Carter Lang came full circle Tuesday by unveiling a Little Free Library stocked with books donated by the very nonprofit he once helped.
The new library, built for the Town of Brookhaven’s Centereach Pool at Hawkins and Hammond roads, serves as Carter’s Eagle Scout project with Troop 74.
Complete with vinyl siding and a shingled roof, the structure gives residents a place to take a book, leave a book and help foster a love of reading throughout the community.
“I’m really excited to be able to share this with all of you,” Carter said during Tuesday’s dedication ceremony and unveiling. “Being a Scout for as long as I have has taught me a lot about leadership and my community. I wanted to keep my project within the bounds of my community.”
Carter said earning the rank of Eagle Scout will likely be “the greatest accomplishment” of his 17 years and thanked everyone who helped make the project possible.
“I’m super excited to work with my town, work with my dad and work with my troop on this project,” he said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The project was completed with assistance from Carter’s father, James Lang of Lang Construction, who helped with the design and construction. Home Depot in Selden donated materials, while Book Fairies provided the books.
Carter and his family also thanked Assistant Scoutmasters Scott Sheridan, Vincent Monaco, Zach Berkey and Laura Rossano, along with fellow Scouts Andrew Monaco, Zander Berkey, Ryan Ailman, Matthew Sheridan, Logan Rembisz, Logan Curatolo-Wagemann, Lucas Cano, Christian Sheridan and Jason Rossano for helping bring the project to life.
Town Councilmen Neil Manzella and Kevin LaValle also joined the Lang family and their supporters at Tuesday’s dedication ceremony.
