March honoring Thomas Valva planned for today at Heckscher State Park

|

The life of Thomas Valva, an 8-year-old boy who police say was killed by his father in Center Moriches after being left in a freezing garage overnight, will be honored with a march today.

From noon to 3 p.m., the nonprofit Specialized Autism Support and Information will be running the rally at Heckscher State Park in East Islip at Field One.

The group’s goal is to support the family of Thomas Valva, the autistic boy who died from hypothermia on Jan. 17.

“The tragic news of Thomas Valva and his family has struck the heart of our community,” the nonprofit wrote on Facebook. “It is up to us to rally together to support his family and push for change so that no child has to suffer like Thomas and his siblings have.”

This isn’t the first time since the death of Thomas that the community has stood in solidarity.

Last month, community members held a vigil to memorialize the boy in the parking lot of Kaler’s Pond Park in Center Moriches.
