Smithtown High School East’s field hockey team hosted a Togetherness Tournament on Sunday to honor the memory of former Smithtown student-athlete Valerie Kratochvil.
Valerie was a junior who played for the school’s field hockey and track & field teams. She was 16 when she died unexpectedly in March.
Teams from Smithtown High School West, Bay Shore and Patchogue-Medford high schools participated at the fundraising event, along with Smithtown High School East. The $1,700 raised at the event will go toward a field hockey memorial scholarship that has been established in Valerie’s name.
Following her death, a GoFundMe page was established to help Valerie’s family with fiancnial difficulties. More than 700 donations poured into the fundraiser, totaling over $44,000.
Valerie was also an All-County musician and a member of the travel field hockey club at Long Island Field Hockey.
