Town demolishes abandoned houses in Mastic and Mastic Beach

|

The Town of Brookhaven demolished two abandoned homes on Tuesday.

“It was a ‘two-fer Tuesday’ in our continuing efforts to clean up neighborhoods in my Council District and throughout the Town of Brookhaven,” said Councilman Dan Panico. “By demolishing these two ‘zombie houses,’ property values have already improved in the area, attractive nuisances and blighted structures are gone and the community will continue to rise.”

The houses were located 149 Dogwood Road in Mastic Beach and 112 Moriches Avenue in Mastic.

The houses were demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code, which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owners.
