The Town of Brookhaven is planning on opening up three of its waterfront areas so residents can get outdoors and exercise in the fresh air.
A release sent out by the town on Friday said that the beaches at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook, Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai and Corey Beach in Blue Point will remain closed, however, the parks will be open for residents to practice social distance jogging, walking and hiking beginning May 2.
But while the parks are starting to open, they are asking that everyone take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from spreading COVID-19 when they leave the house.
In order to protect themselves and others from spreading the virus, certain guidelines are being put into effect. To enjoy the nice weather, walks and joggers are allowed in but residents must maintain a distance of six-feet apart from one another while exercising and masks are recommended.
As the beach is closed, chairs umbrellas, blankets, coolers, fishing, congregating and any sporting activity are prohibited at these locations, as well as dogs.
No lifeguards will be on duty, bathrooms and playgrounds will be closed, and parking capacity will be reduced by 50% to help prevent large crowds from coming together. When cars leave, those waiting will be allowed in, which will be strictly enforced by code enforcement and park staff.
The town is also asking that people who have a cough or fever stay home and to limit their stay to allow other residents to enjoy the town facilities.
