When President Donald Trump arrives at Bethpage Black this Friday for the opening day of the Ryder Cup, fans can expect airport-style screening, long lines and significant traffic restrictions across Nassau County.
Officials are urging golf fans to leave early, pack light and be prepared for added security as Trump makes his only scheduled public appearance of the tournament.
TSA-style checkpoints
According to organizers, spectators will face enhanced screening both at the gates and around key areas of the course, including the clubhouse and the first tee grandstand. Anyone leaving those secure zones will need to be screened again to re-enter.
Gates open at 5 a.m., but Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said people should plan for delays. “When the president does come here on Friday we’re going to ask everybody … we’re going to have a lot of security measures in place. So it’s going to slow it down a little bit getting into that park, so get there early,” Ryder said.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman stressed the measures are standard for a presidential visit. “We work very closely with the Secret Service and … all our federal, state and law enforcement agencies,” he said earlier this week.
What you can’t bring
Spectators are being asked to keep personal items to a minimum. Bags must be clear and within size requirements. Among the prohibited items Friday:
- Folding chairs
- Large vaping devices
- Torch-style lighters
- Metal or hard plastic insulated beverage containers
- Large umbrellas (small retractables only)
- Range finders
- Laptops and tablets
Umbrella use may also be restricted in certain areas. Organizers recommend ponchos if rain is in the forecast. All bags and belongings are subject to inspection.
There is no storage for banned items inside the course, though a limited number of lockers are available outside the main entrance.
Traffic and parking
Local officials are also warning fans to stay away from side streets around the course. “You can park down at Jones Beach. You can use Uber as public transportation to get in here,” Ryder said. “I do not advise you try to drive your own car and park close. If you do park on the side streets where the residents live you will be ticketed and towed.”
Shuttle service will be running from Jones Beach, and Farmingdale Village has instituted $500 fines for anyone who leaves a car in municipal lots between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. through the end of the tournament.
Blakeman added that police will be “out in force” to manage traffic flow and keep the event secure.
