Two brothers stranded in LI Sound off Shoreham Beach rescued by police

|

Two fishermen sailing just off Shoreham Beach on Monday night were rescued after falling overboard.

At 7:30 p.m., Suffolk Police Marine Bureau officers Cory Kim and Robert Reed responded to a call about two fishermen — Gustavo Quinones, 30, and Gusmil Quinones, 35, both of Brooklyn — on a six-foot inflatable raft that had not returned to shore.

The pair had launched their boat off of Shoreham Beach and were struck by a rogue wave in the Long Island Sound, knocking them overboard, authorities said.

With assistance from a Suffolk County Police Aviation helicopter, the officers searched for the missing brothers for over a half-hour 30.

They were floating in the water, wearing life jackets and clinging to an inflatable seat cushion from the raft when they saw Marine Delta.

The men shouted for help and were heard by the officers, but Kim and Reed could not immediately spot them in the dark. Aviation section officers responded and utilized a spotlight to help locate the men a short distance from Marine Delta.

The men were pulled to safety and transported back to shore. they were not injured.
