Two Suffolk County residents — one lives in Mastic and the other is from St. James — claimed million-dollar lottery prizes on Thursday, New York Lottery officials announced.
Ricky Alessi of St. James claimed a $1 million Powerball second-prize for matching the first five numbers drawn back on May 27. The other lucky Long Islander, Jose Carranza of Mastic, claimed a $1 million prize on the New York Lottery’s Platinum Power scratch-off game.
Alessi received a one-time lump sum payment of $651,000, after required withholdings. He purchased his winning ticket at Liquorium Wine & Liquor, located at 430-04 North Country Road in St. James.
Carranza bought his winning ticket in East Moriches — at East End Marketing, located at 620 Montauk Highway. He also accepted a one-time lump sum payment. After required taxes, he took home $416,641, according to New York Lottery.
In the May 27 Powerball drawing, the winning numbers randomly selected were 9, 30, 39, 49 and 59; the Powerball was 21.
As of Thursday, there was one $1 million top prize remaining on the Platinum Power scratch-off game. Players can check the status of any New York Lottery scratch-off by downloading the Game Report at nylottery.ny.gov.
Liquorium had announced over the summer that the store had a big winner in Powerball.
