Two Patchogue firehouses faced-off in friendly hockey match

|

Instead of putting out fires, these two local fire departments spent their New Year’s Day looking to catch fire — in hockey.

On that Wednesday morning, the Patchogue Fire Department and Hagerman Fire Department laced up their rollerblades for a friendly exhibition at All Star Arena in Coram.

The idea behind the first annual battle of the firehouses was the brainchild of Hagerman’s fire chief, Timmy Dunham.

It was a great matchup too, described Dan Cantelmo, of the Patchogue Fire Department. “We were playing for a trophy and bragging rights within the brotherhood,” said Cantelmo.

The winner of the back-and-forth game went to Cantelmo’s team, who won 14-13 with a last-minute goal.

With the stands filled with family and friends, the two fire departments will consider adding a charitable component next year to the fiery competition.

“It’s a great idea [to fundraise],” said Cantelmo. “We’re looking forward to next year.”
