Two women on paddleboards rescued from Long Island Sound off Cedar Beach

|

Two paddleboarders fighting strong tides in the Long Island Sound were rescued by Suffolk Police off Mount Sinai Tuesday afternoon.

The call came in at 5:51 p.m., with the women reporting through 911 that they could not get back to shore, police said.

The paddleboarders, identified by police as Gabriella Carleo, 31, of Selden and Selena Miranda, 26 of Farmingville, were about 1.5 five miles north of Cedar Beach at the time.

A Suffolk County Police Aviation helicopter was deployed and soon spotted the women, who had tied their boards together. Their exact locations were relayed to responding Suffolk police officers Chris Defeo and Timothy Dillon, who were already on board Marine Delta and en route.

The officers reached the women and pulled them to safety shortly afterward. No one was injured, police said.
