Sunflower Festival

Waterdrinker Family Farm in Manorville is launching a sunflower festival this weekend that will include plenty of flowers and family activities.

“We had the tulip festival to mark the start of the summer. To introduce fall, we’re unveiling the sunflower festival,” said Marc Weiss, who manages the farm with his wife, Brittney.

The event, which starts on Saturday, will include U-pick sunflowers and wildflowers, hayrides and a bounce house during Labor Day weekend, mini golf, barnyard animals, lawn games, a wooden playland, pedal cars, a corn maze, fresh-baked pies, local produce and fall plants. The farm is located at 663 Wading River Road.

“It’s really a family effort,” Weiss said. “Without the family, we wouldn’t be able to put on this festival.”

Admission for the Labor Day weekend is $8 per person. Children under 2 get in free.

“We’re hoping to go into as late into October as we can,” Weiss said, adding that the farm had tried a smaller sunflower field last year. This is an expansion of that effort. “Sunflowers like the warmer months. We’re relying on the weather.”

Weiss said the farm is hoping to open the Long Island Farm Brewery in a barn behind the farmstand in the spring to correspond with next year’s tulip festival.
