William Floyd freshman continues winning ways at New York state championships

|

The freshman phenom from Shirley keeps winning.

William Floyd’s Zariel Macchia this month earned All-State and All-Federation honors in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs at the New York State Track and Field Championships in Cicero, New York.

Macchia is competing this weekend in the 3,000-meter run at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, together with her teammate Aaliyah Jordan, who will compete in the 2,000-meter Steeplechase. Macchia is also the recipient of the Frank LaBianca Award for the second consecutive year — an honor that recognizes the most outstanding distance runner in Suffolk County.

Earlier this month, she put on a dominant performance at the Suffolk County State qualifier event, winning the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races and placing a close second in the 800-meter run.

In December, Macchia finished 12th in the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships in San Diego Saturday. She earned All America honors and was the highest placing freshman in the prestigious race that showcased the very best high school cross country competitors from across the nation.
