The 24-year-old gummy dealer who on Instagram sold THC candy that sickened a dozen William Floyd Middle School students last year is headed to prison.
Wilmer Castillo Garcia, a Guatemalan national, will be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after he serves his two-year jail sentence Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.
Castillo Garcia pleaded guilty in July to third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced this week by Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony Senft Jr.
A dozen students sickened
Castillo Garcia admitted during his plea that he sold THC gummies over Instagram in March 2025. The gummies were later eaten by 12 students at William Floyd Middle School in Moriches.
Each of the students needed medical attention after falling ill, prosecutors said.
Two months later — on May 5 and May 12, 2025 — Castillo Garcia sold cocaine and marijuana to an undercover officer, Tierney said.
Caught at the border
Following his arrest and arraignment in August 2025, Castillo Garcia was released on his own recognizance because the charges are not bail-eligible.
On Oct. 4, 2025, he was arrested at the Lewiston Bridge in Lewiston, New York, while trying to enter Canada, prosecutors said.
He was then placed in ICE custody and held at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia. At the DA’s request, ICE returned him to Suffolk County to face charges in the gummies sale case.
“New York’s broken bail laws put this defendant back on the street after he was arrested for selling drugs to an undercover officer and for giving weed-laced gummies to children,” Tierney said. “He then used that opportunity to flee toward the Canadian border.”
