With roads clear in Greater Babylon, officials warn of extreme cold

Whipping winds and higher-than-expected snowfalls made for a busy Thursday into Friday for municipals workers and firefighters in the Greater Babylon area.

The roads are largely clear, though officials are warning about the frigid temperatures that could lead to some icy travels.

“I think the roads look really great,” said Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. “We seem to take pride in our snow removal.”

North Babylon registered some of the largest snow totals by accumulating 15.7 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday’s intense snowfall mixed with windy conditions contributed to a fire on the hard-to-reach Oak Island that reportedly damaged two homes there.

Babylon Fire Department was able to use Lakeland Fire Department’s hovercraft to cross the ice and control the blaze.

“All in all it was good, because no one was injured and houses can be replaced,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

After the storm, government officials are now focusing on the upcoming frigid conditions.

The NWS is reporting that temperatures will fall into the single digits Friday (6 degrees) and Saturday (3 degrees), causing officials to be concerned about the roads.

“The worse thing you can have following a storm like this is extremely cold temperatures,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said at a press conference Friday morning.

When temperatures drop, Bellone explained, salt and sand become less effective in clearing off the snow, leading to icy roads.

“Major roads look good today,” said Bellone, “but it is still imperative that residents remain cautious due to the icy conditions and that they avoid unnecessary travel.”

Saturday’s high will be 12 degrees, with wind chills making it feel more like  -5 to -10 degrees. Wind gusts could reach as high as 32 mph.

“One of the most important things is to dress accordingly if you’re going outside,” said Scordino.

With the frigid temperatures, Bellone is urging residents to check on their neighbors.

“The reality is temperatures like this are extremely dangerous and life threatening,” he said.

He also gave the number for Temporary Housing Assistance for those without heat and shelter: 631-854-9547.
