Walmart in Yaphank reopens Thursday after fire suppression repairs

|

The Walmart Supercenter in Yaphank is back open Thursday after being closed a day earlier due to a malfunction in its fire suppression system, officials said.

The store was ordered shut down Wednesday by Town of Brookhaven Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman after it was determined the building’s fire suppression system was not functioning properly, Brookhaven Town spokesman Drew Scott said.

Repairs and testing have since been completed, and the system is now operating as intended, allowing the store to resume normal operations Thursday, officials said.

The issue first came to the attention of fire officials ab out 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, when crews received a call reporting a fire in the store’s pump room. The Ridge Fire Department responded, and while technicians were working on the sprinkler system, an automatic alarm was triggered about 6:25 p.m.

Officials said the problem was traced to a malfunction in the fire suppression pump. After repairs were made and the system was tested, the store was cleared to reopen.

The roughly 197,000-square-foot supercenter opened in 2021 as the anchor retail tenant at The Boulevard in Yaphank, a 322-acre mixed-use development at the northwest corner of the Long Island Expressway and William Floyd Parkway.

The store features a full-service grocery, home center, auto care center, pharmacy, garden center and grocery pickup area. It employs hundreds of workers.
